About four years ago I attended one of Paul’s ‘beginners drawing ‘days. I had not done art before and was somewhat afraid of drawing, always believing I couldn’t. At the end of that day, to my amazement and wonder I was able to draw and this opened a new world to me. Since then I have been to several classes and courses, including a year at Shrewsbury College of Art. I have experienced various media, acrylics, pastels, charcoal, watercolour and others. Recently, I bought some oils and I am looking forward to trying them. However, my first love is watercolour which I find magical and, although very challenging and in many ways unforgiving, it brings constant surprises which are an endless delight to me. I paint regularly, several days each week, and I find exploring new techniques exciting. I look at the work of other artists and always see effects that I do not know how to do. I try to work out how, spending more time experimenting and playing than in trying to produce pictures. However I have sold a few of my paintings and with the aid of the computer, I print some to make cards which are sold in the local gallery. Ann Siviter

New Horizons
It is so easy to get into a rut with painting and even more easy to fall into the trap Picasso so aptly described: ‘Success is dangerous, one begins to copy oneself, and to copy oneself is more dangerous than to copy others – it leads to sterility.’ So with a New Year on the horizon perhaps it is time to adopt a completely new approach to the way you work. Why not try some of the following ideas:
Rather than sitting in front of a scene or still life, drawing it carefully before applying paint, why not adopt a different approach. Sit and stare at the scene for about five minutes, note in your mind the things that are important, tones, colours, shapes even the feel or emotion the scene evokes. Move away from the scene, or hide away the still life, now draw what you ‘see’, feel or remember. You won’t be able to put in all the detail, but what you will draw is what is really important about what you have seen and that will be interesting.
Try breaking one of the habits that you have got into with your drawing and painting. Be honest with yourself. Do you rely on drawing only things seen, do you rely on photographs, do you always draw out your idea before painting, do you always use the same colours / colour scheme? Why not ditch the habit, it can be quite a liberating experience. Go on you know you really want to give it a try!!
Don’t forget: Filbert Splosh GIFT VOUCHERS come with free course materials if ordered before 20 December 2007.
